Soccer Institute Ladies coach, Amogelang Moshushu, is aiming to lead her Sasol League team to promotion to the Hollywoodbets Super League.

Moshushu, who was recently appointed Deputy Chairperson of USSA Football NEC, is hard at work to continue developing the game from grassroots level.

From a young age, Moshushu had a passion for sport and says that her mother played a vital role in her love for the game.

To date, she says her team’s promotion to Stream A in the USSA club championships in 2019 and being chosen as the Provincial U19 Coach as her career highlights.

Speaking with Tlamelo Kganakga, Moshushu chats about the importance of women taking up leadership roles and reveals her ambitions.

Amogelang, thank you for chatting with us. Please tell us about yourself and where you are from.

I am Amogelang Azania Moshushu from Rustenburg but grew up in Mahikeng.

When and where did your love for sport begin?

At a very young age! More than anything I liked the analysis part of sport and used to follow all sporting codes live on television. I had my mom who was always ready to explain the rules of different sport to me.

How did you join the Soccer Institute Ladies team?

My journey first began when I joined the men’s team. After 2 years, I was appointed as the Head Coach for the ladies team.

Last season, your team finished 5th in the Sasol League. How do you feel about the performance of your players?

I was very happy with our performance, my team showed determination and the will that they want to win. From our previous standing this was a good one.

What are you hoping to achieve in the upcoming season?

We hoping to do better than we did last year, to finish in a higher position than we were and to be in the top 8 in USSA 2022.

Talking about USSA – You were recently appointed Deputy Chairperson by USSA Football NEC. What does this appointment mean for you?

It means that I will be able to grow as a woman in sport. I am very excited and look forward to the growth that is going to come with it. I am also looking forward to the fact that I will be part of the people spearheading football to greater heights.

What are the challenges you have faced in your career so far?

Gender discrimination – most of the time people look down on you because you are a woman in a man’s field – I have to raise my voice twice as louder so that I am heard.

What would you say are some of the highlights of your career so far?

When my team got promoted to Stream A in the USSA club championships in 2019, also being chosen to be the Provincial U19 Coach.

Which sportswomen do you admire and why?

Honestly, I look up to myself. It hasn’t been an easy road, but I didn’t give up. I pull up even in spaces that don’t favour me. I have had to make my voice heard in the hardest way and I’m still fighting to prove myself every day.

But in the sport industry, I would say Nomsa Mahlangu (UJ Sports Head of Department). She gives the hope that one day we women would be able to run the sport industry and be in leadership without having to fight and prove ourselves – that our gender doesn’t take away our strength.

Do you think women should take up more leadership roles in sport and if yes, why is it important?

Yes, I think so because we need to tap into our strongest potentials and look away from saying certain roles have genders. Women need to own up space in sport so that we can take away the discrimination of genders and saying you can’t do it because you are a woman.

What is your greatest ambition?

To see our team promoted to the Hollywoodbets Super League and to have great leaders come out of our side.

What do you think we as media can do to amplify women’s sports?

Talk to women in sport, expose them to the world and make gsport reachable and visible.
