Brigid Kosgei smashed the Tokyo Marathon course record, running the third-fastest time of 2:16:02 on Sunday, 6 March 2022.
Kosgei turned up the heat in the last 5km’s of the race after Ethiopia’s Gotyton Gebrselase proved to be tough competition in the first 35km’s.
Ashete Bekere overtook Gebrselase in the final mile to finish second in 2:17:58, nearly two minutes behind Kosgei.
However, Gebrselase held on for third in 2:18:18 to complete an Ethiopian 2 and 3 finish.
Speaking on her outstanding victory, Kosgei says: “I’m happy with my victory and course record, but my target was to run 2:14 which, I believe, is still achievable.”
