Ash & Co Struggle in Switzerland

Picture: Tristan Jones / LETSouth Africans continued to struggle in the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open, at Golf Gerre Losone in Switzerland, as all four of them missed the cut after Friday’s round two.

Lee-Anne Pace was the best finisher of the participating South African quartet, but a double-bogey on the ninth joined with 6 bogeys ruined her Thursday even-par, to leave her on 150 at the halfway mark, one agonising shot away from continuing to participate in the tournament.

Newly-signed Nike athlete, Ashleigh Simon, improved her day one result by two shots for a three-over 75 for a share of 95th place, together with Stacey Bregman, who improved by four shots for a two-over 74, and Laurette Maritz, who scored 78 on day two.

Italian Federique Piovano joined day 1 tournament leader Germany’s Bettina Hauert, for a share of the lead on three-under-par.

Hauert, who held a four-way-tie for the lead overnight, added a one-over 73 to her opening 68 for a 36-hole total of 141.

She said: “They were very tough conditions but I made so many mistakes it was unbelievable. When I look at the other scores I’m pretty happy but I’m not that happy about my own game.”

Piovano, 25, from Rome, had an even more mixed round of four birdies, two bogeys and a double at the par-three 11th hole, where she hit a faded tee shot into the water.

“I’m actually pretty excited about how I played,” said Piovano, who added a 72 to her opening 69. “There were a lot of people cheering me on in Italian so I liked it.”

Piovano and Hauert finished one shot clear of joint overnight leader Frederique Seeholzer from Switzerland, who had a 74, and England’s Lora Fairclough, who had a 73.
