South Africa’s national women’s soccer team, Banyana Banyana, have picked up their second win at the COSAFA Cup, beating Malawi 3-nil in a highly physical game in Lusaka this afternoon.
Malawi attacked from the outset and put in some big tackles, forcing the South Africans to adopt a more cautious approach.
Despite the high intensity start from Malawi, striker Veronica Phewa gave Banyana Banyana the lead in the 25th minute.
Captain Portia Modise scored South Africa’s second to give them a 2-nil lead at halftime.
Antonio Carelse made it 3-nil in the 73rd minute to give South Africa a satisfying win.
South Africa have now scored 12 goals in two games, having beaten Lesotho 9-nil in their opening game on Tuesday.
Portia Modise and her team will be looking to book a place in Saturday’s final and make it three wins in three matches tomorrow.
Their opponent will only be made known following the results of the Zambia/Swaziland and the Angola/Zimbabwe encounters, currently underway.
