Pretoria, Thursday, 24th August 2006 – One of South Africa’s top athletics clubs – Harmony Athletics – have entered a very strong team for the SPAR Women’s 10 km Challenge in Hatfield, Pretoria, on Saturday afternoon.

The team will be spearheaded by Ronel Thomas – winner of the Port Elizabeth and Durban races this year – and Louisa Leballo, who has twice won the Johannesburg race.

Others in the Harmony team are Gloria Baeba, Paulina Phaho, Catherine Nkosi, Sihadi Mbofholowo, Joyce Makwarella, Rosta Matlane, Ndofhiwa Mundalamo, Hellaria Johannes of Namibia, Tabitha Tsatsa of Zimbabwe, Sharon Tavenga and Haimanot Bekele of Ethiopia.

Prize money for the race has been increased to R10 000 for the winner, and a fierce tussle for top spot is expected.

Organisers are expecting a fast race, with the winner coming in under 34 minutes, and at least 20 runners finishing in under 40 minutes.

The addition of runners like Johannes, Tsatsa and Bekele means that the Challenge has become truly international.

Harmony have also entered a strong junior team, with runners like Noria Sibanda, Casilda Matumane, Elizabeth Mokgadi, Zinyane Sihotle, Sipadi Ramochela, Alita Phiri and Jane Tuge expected to put up  good performances.

Three of the entrants for Saturday’s race – Poppy Mlambo, Ronel Thomas and Irvette van Blerk – were selected earlier this week to represent South Africa at the Southern Region half marathon championships in Mozambique on September 23.

Entries at all the stores are now closed but entries will still be accepted at the race venue tomorrow, Friday August 25 between 10:00 and 17:00 and on Saturday (race day) between 10:00 and 12:00.
