Road running glamour is set to descend on Bloemfontein, with the city having been designated to host the third leg of the 2007 Nedbank City Marathon and Matha Series on Saturday 21 April 2007.
The Bloemfontein race will be the third of nine prestigious events, presented by Athletics South Africa (ASA), at venues throughout the country as part of the 2007 Nedbank City Marathon and Matha Series.
This follows on the popularity and success of the 2006 Nedbank Series which introduced a whole new level of competition, excitement and prestige to the sport of road running last year. The 2007 Series has been expanded to incorporate four new venues – Bloemfontein, Durban, Cape Town and Polokwane.
ASA’s mandate to local organisers is to wherever possible provide courses which are fast and flat, with a prime objective of the series being to uplift standards and produce opportunities for top competition and fast times.
One of the prime successes of the Series has been the enormously positive impact it has had on athletic performances, as seen particularly in the results of the first two events of 2007.
Earlier this month the Nedbank Port Elizabeth SA Marathon Championships was run despite windy conditions, in an event which produced 16 women finishers under 3 hours.
The complete list of dates and venues for 2007 is as follows, with the 2007 Nedbank Series consisting of 4 city marathons, 10 short distance races and 9 fun runs.
The Nedbank City Marathon and Matha Series is open to runners of all standards, and the Bloemfontein half-marathon presents an ideal opportunity for local runners to rub shoulders with some of South Africa’s finest.
The event is sure to attract the cream of South Africa’s distance running athletes with over R200,000 prize money up for grabs, including R20,000 first prizes for men and women.
Entries for the Nedbank Bloemfontein Half Marathon will open next week, as well as being available online at the Nedbank Sport website. The closing date for half marathon entries is strictly Monday 16 April 2007.
Entry fee for the half marathon is R40 and all finishers will receive a medal, t-shirt, Energade and a goody bag.

Entries for the 5km fun run will be taken at the Start at a price of R5 and everyone will receive a doughnut and Energade at the finish.
