In a remarkable display of rugby dominance, Bulls Daisies concluded the 2023 season in style, securing a well-deserved victory in the SA Rugby Women’s Premier Division final on Saturday, 26 August 2023.
The final match, held at the Loftus Versfeld B-field in Pretoria, saw the Bulls Daisies triumph over DHL Western Province with a resounding 69-8 win, capping off a flawless season.
With this triumph, the Bulls Daisies sealed their record-breaking 14th consecutive victory of the season and claimed the prestigious Women’s Premier Division trophy for the first time since 2006. Their exceptional performance showcased the wisdom of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union’s decision to invest in a professional women’s team.
Right from the start, the crowd witnessed the prowess of the home side as the Bulls Daisies executed a flowing move just five minutes into the game. Libbie Janse van Rensburg broke through near the corner flag, scoring the first try of the match. Although the Daisies faced some early handling errors and conceded a try to Western Province, they quickly regained their composure.
As the game progressed, the Daisies’ backline showcased their class, supported by the relentless effort of the forwards. Unathi Mali made a noteworthy contribution with a try, following a well-executed counterattack led by Simamkele Namba. Despite Western Province’s determination, the Daisies’ solid defence held them at bay.
With a halftime lead of 33-8, the Bulls Daisies continued their dominance in the second half. Ayanda Malinga began the half by replicating her first-half effort, capitalising on a cross-kick from Janse van Rensburg. Jakkie Cilliers and Janse van Rensburg also added their names to the try list, further extending the Bulls’ lead.
