When we think of the team Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, we instantly think of success. Someone who is key to showcasing the team’s talent and soccer genius is Oreneile Lebethe, the Social Media Manager for both the senior women’s and men’s teams.
With both teams ranked among the best on the African continent, Lebethe has to emulate that high standard in her content, and she says the ethos of success runs through the whole football club.
“Across the entire club, we’re all aware of the winning mentality. A winning team deserves a digital presence to match. The pressure is always on to keep improving.”

Lebethe feels she is in a very privileged position because she is able to inspire women and girls as she navigates a career that has historically been male-dominated.
“I believe that yes there are spaces that are male-dominated and I think a lot of women across many different industries, have shown us that you can show up and and you can be a force to be reckoned with alongside male counterparts,” Lebethe continued.
“I think that when you enter a traditionally male-dominated space you should not lead with you being on the back foot because you feel you are the incorrect gender. You should rather lead with the confidence that you are there because you are adequate to do the job.”
“You should do the best job you possibly can because you are carrying the hopes and dreams of other women and you are helping to do more than your job. You are breaking down stereotypes, you are setting up a fresher better perspective for the world to move forward. I take it seriously, and I work with a lot of pride that I am a woman in the position that I am in, in the industry that I am in that I don’t let it get me down. I certainly appreciate the fact that I have been able to get here and I don’t take it for granted.”
Social Media managers have arguably one of the most intense jobs as they have to constantly be on the cusp of the most engaging and entertaining content. Being the person who is in charge of making these ideas come to a reality is something we social media followers shouldn’t take for granted. Lebethe explains just what her job entails and how she brings the best content for her clubs to the fore.
“As the social media manager at Mamelodi Sundowns, I have to ensure that our supporters have a steady feed of engaging content on our pages. I work closely with the production, communications, and marketing managers to ensure that the club is well-represented on digital platforms. I create the social media strategy for the club, ensure it’s applied, content calendars, copy, and look out for any opportunities we can use to our advantage.”
Lebethe studied Corporate Communication and decided to focus on social (digital) media and since she has been in her current role she has learned some important lessons.
“Due to the speed of social, every day, every post is an opportunity for improvement. There’s something to learn, especially from your competitors. Always have a spirit to learn, technology is incredibly fast.”
She added shared that to put out the best content she makes sure her finger is always not the pulse of what is going on.
“Keeping in touch with trends, reading up on the latest developments, attending workshops, and always striving to be better skilled/equipped.”
Reaching the heights in one’s career like Lebethe has takes a lot of hard work and dedication and she has this advice for those young ladies who are looking to follow in her footsteps.
“You have all the cards you need, learn how to use them. And there’s no such a place as a male-dominated space, you get in that space and introduce yourself. No one except you can tell you where you should be.”
She added that the growth in the industry has been immense and she hopes this continues for women who are interested in this field.
“It’s imperative to even out the playing field. Women are as important as men in every industry and seeing how women’s sport continues to grow exponentially we can see that the sky is truly the limit.”
