Her background in radio sports presenting, prepared her well for the Netball SA Media Officer position in several ways, having trained Mokgalagadi to communicate effectively, to think on her feet and articulate complex ideas simply. Her transition from radio to media officer was not a decision she had taken lightly. After devoting 16 beautiful years to radio, she developed a longing for something more to expand her knowledge and skillset. Her deep passion for women’s sport and dedication to fostering their growth led her to be captivated by Netball SA’s inspiring vision, unwavering values, and steadfast commitment to furthering the sport.
“I was excited about the prospect of venturing into uncharted territory and embracing fresh experiences, that would contribute to my personal and professional growth. I was ready for the new chapter in my career and the opportunity to join Netball SA felt like the perfect fit.”
The roles of Radio Sports Presenter and a Netball SA Media Officer differ significantly: In radio, she delved into the intricacies of various sporting codes, providing in-dept coverage and analysis; contrasted with her current duties, where she is immersed in gaining a comprehensive understanding of a single specific sporting code to deliver better-informed content to the passionate netball community.
Mokgalagadi believes that winning the 2019 Vision View Woman In Radio award at the Momentum gsport Awards significantly elevated her game plan in several ways. A validation of her contribution, dedication, and impact in radio, the award enhanced her credibility in the industry, and opened doors to new opportunities and collaborations.
“The Momentum gsport Awards has connected me to with like-minded women and industry leaders, whilst expanding my network. The award has given me the confidence boost and courage I needed to pursue even more ambitious goals and challenges.”
“The award has contributed to a greater impact in the industry in promoting women empowerment and gender equality in sports media. I am now more determined than ever to make a meaningful difference in the sports media space,” said Mokgalagadi.
The media specialist regards #PowerOfRecognition and #SheOwnsHerSuccess as powerful mantras that resonate deeply with anyone that has had the privilege of being part of the movement. These concepts remind Mokgalagadi that recognition and ownership are powerful tools for creating positive change and promoting gender equality.
“#PowerOfRecognition emphasises acknowledging and valuing individual achievements and contributions, whilst celebrating success and milestones, no matter how small, and also creating a culture of appreciation and gratitude,” says Mokgalagadi.
“#SheOwnsHerSuccess embodies unapologetically claiming and celebrating one’s achievements and embracing ownership and accountability for one’s success,” she continued. “These mantras inspire me to continue pushing boundaries, celebrating successes, and empowering others to do the same.”

As a former radio sports presenter and the current Media Officer at Netball SA, Mokgalagadi fulfils her role with intent and purpose, by contributing to a more inclusive and representative sports media landscape, ultimately elevating the visibility and promotion of women in the industry. She strives to provide a platform for female athletes, coaches, and officials to share their stories and expertise.
“By breaking down gender barriers and challenging traditional stereotypes, I aim to promote women in non-traditional roles, highlighting the achievements and stories of female athletes and leagues demonstrates their value and appeal.”
Mokgalagadi has had a remarkable career in the sports media space, she was the first female at YOU FM, the only commercial radio station in the North West Province, to host a sports show, and the first female to be appointed Sports Editor at the station.
“Receiving recognition for my work, including nominations and awards, motivates me to continue pushing boundaries. Winning the Woman in Radio award at the Momentum gsport Awards recognised my contributions to sports broadcasting. Winning the Best Sports Presenter of the Year at the NW Sports Awards in 2023 was another significant achievement,” she said.
“Interviewing and profiling inspirational athletes, coaches, and sports personalities has been a rewarding experience. Working with Netball SA to promote and develop the sport, particularly for women and girls, is a fulfilling endeavour,” she explained with a smile.
Having worked in both industries, she advises aspiring young females to develop a strong understanding of sports, including rules, history, and current events. They should build versatile skills in writing, broadcasting, and digital media. One must gain experience through internships, volunteering, or creating a blog or podcast.
“Network, be persistent, and stay updated on industry trends. Specialize in areas like women’s sports or analytics. For media officer roles, hone communication and interpersonal skills, understand your organisation’s goals, be proactive and flexible, build relationships, stay organised, and manage crises effectively. Believe in yourself, embrace challenges, and view failures as growth opportunities,” she said.
Mokgalagadi aims to continue breaking down barriers in the media space whilst challenging gender stereotypes. She wants to empower and mentor more women to pursue careers in sports journalism and media.
“Increasing representation and coverage of women’s sports and female athletes is a priority. Advocating for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in the media industry is essential. I aspire to launch innovative content and platforms that showcase women’s sports and stories.”
“Creating initiatives that promote gender equality in media is a key goal. Expanding my skill set and expertise to stay ahead in the ever-evolving media landscape is crucial. Ultimately, I hope to inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in media,” said Mokgalagadi.
Her journey from radio to Netball SA is one of growth, passion, and dedication to empowering women in sports. As she continues to embrace new challenges, she remains committed to making a meaningful impact in the sports media landscape, promoting gender equality, and inspiring others to follow their dreams.
