Chloe Badenhorst Claims Top Spot at SA Chess Champs

Chloe Badenhorst beat the odds to claim top spot at the 2022 South African Chess Championships which was held at Newlands Cricket ground in Cape Town from 7-14 May.

The competition was played in a round-robin format in the open, women, and senior sections and served as a qualifying event for the South African national teams who will represent the country at the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai.

15-year-old Badenhorst was the lowest-ranked player at the tournament and went on to beat the field 5/7, to gain a top position with five points.

She picked up 117 rating points along the way to her win.

Defending champion and African Chess Champion, Jesse Nikki February finished half a point behind Badenhorst to finish in second position, while Charlize van Zyl rounded up the top three with 4 points.
