Two late goals from Vicky Lopez saw defending champions Spain book themselves a spot in the FIFA U17 World Cup semi-final round, after beating Japan 2-1 at the Pandit Jawaharlal Stadium in Margao, Goa on Saturday, 22 October 2022.
Spain lost an opportunity to take the lead in the first half when Carla Camacho missed a penalty in the 37th minute after a foul play by Toko Koga.
In the second half, Japan’s Momoko Tanikawa hit a stunner from long range to put her team into a 1-0 lead.
However, Spain continued to knock and equalised in the 87th minute as Lopez did not miss the target.
Lopez went on to seal the deal in the dying minutes of injury time, to ensure that Spain have another opportunity to get closer to defending their crown.
Spain will face Germany in the semi-final on Wednesday, 26 October.
Colombia also secured their semi-final spot after defeating Tanzania 3-0. The Tanzanians will be proud of their FIFA World Cup run as they made history reaching the quarter-final.
The Colombians will face Nigeria in the first semi-final at 13h00 on Wednesday.
