Banyana Banyana Head Coach Desiree Ellis reflects on the team’s performance after a 6-0 loss to Brazil at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday, 5 September 2022.
The South Americans beat their hosts 3-0 in the first friendly at Orlando Stadium last week, meaning that they managed to score nine goals over the two games.
Speaking after the second match, Ellis highlighted Banyana’s mistakes, saying: “In the beginning we spoke about minimising our mistakes, we spoke about being brave and about creating opportunities, but we didn’t start well. I think the (first) goal we gave away was a rush of blood and then after that I thought we played better.
“We also spoke about being concentrated for the full 90 minutes and then again we gave away a silly goal and in that time we created a few (opportunities). We went in, tried to address it and immediately after that, we made a mistake again and it’s top teams like Brazil that will pounce on. And, when we get an opportunity, we don’t utilise the opportunity,” Ellis added.
“All round the result wasn’t great because we are better than that. I explained to the players that this is way up from WAFCON – we still have a lot of work to do, the (FIFA) World Cup is not tomorrow, it’s almost a year from now and we wanted a test like this to see where we at,” she concluded.
The South Africans will now go back to the drawing board as they continue to prepare for the FIFA Women’s World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.
