South African U19 Girls Head Coach, Dinesha Devnarain and Springbok Women’s dual international player, Babalwa Latsha, share vital tips on how athletes can remain disciplined and focused on developing their craft.

In her coaching philosophy, the former Momentum Proteas all-rounder believes a major component is about making better humans first, before good cricketers, and discipline plays a major role in both.

Devnarain reveals the following ways one can maintain discipline for future success:

1.Have a plan – Have goals (short, medium, and long term) Understand your weaknesses and strengths, know where you struggle, and know-how to succeed.

2.For each part of the plan or goal, have actions against them with a timeline – make visual representations where you can see them daily.

3.Review your plans accordingly to the time frame of goals.

4.Have an accountability partner – a person who coaches another person in terms of helping the other person keep a commitment. Someone you can trust challenges you and feel safe with to be your most natural self and accept your shortcomings.

5.Do not look for shortcuts, master the basic and foundation skills well.

6.Stay relevant to what the sport demands e.g., S&C, Gym, hours at practice, flexibility, rehab, etc. – If you don’t take care of your body, your body will take rest for you, and hopefully it’s not on a career-defining tournament or series.

7.Reward yourself when achieving goals and forgive yourself when you stray away.

8.Journal your work ethic, mental state, and thoughts.

9.Practice, fail, learn, and start over.

10.Life is short, remind yourself daily that this could be taken away quickly – be blessed.

11.Take care of yourself.

SA Bids Farewell to Babalwa Latsha

Latsha, who became the first South African female rugby player to sign an international deal, believes that having clear and concise goals makes you disciplined and helps you to sharpen your craft.

She says that it is not always easy but if you remain focused, you will achieve your goals:

1.Have clear and realistic goals and keep working towards them.

2.As an athlete it’s important to be honest with yourself and keep yourself accountable as there is a lot of internal work that happens within the process of keeping yourself accountable.

3.Have a pure passion for what you do. It is either you have it or you don’t. Passion fuels the constant drive to remain focused and to constantly want to become better and better at your craft.

4.Over and above being an athlete, you must aspire to be a better person, aspire to be a person that inspires other people through your diligence, discipline, and skill that you have maintained over time.
