Independent Online and News24 websites are both reporting that former South African athletics great Elana Meyer will return to competitive racing, to claim the title in a race she’s not competed in before.
IOL reports that Meyer is ready to end the reign of the Russian ladies in local ultra-marathon events.
"I know it will be tough", said Meyer, who aims to achieve success in next year’s 56km Old Mutual Two Oceans marathon.
"The Russians have athletes such as Tatyana Zirkova (who won this year) and the twins Olesya and Yelena Nurgalieva, who may not look like natural athletes, but who have great strength and surprising speed.
"They will not be beaten easily."
The reports state that Bruce Fordyce has agreed to assist Meyer, as she seeks to achieve world-class form in this new quest for personal success.
