Exciting competition is expected at the SA Cross Country Championships which will take place at Lesedi Village, Middelburg Mine, near Witbank on Saturday.
Almost 700 women’s and men’s entries had been received from 16 of Athletics South Africa’s provinces for the 8 Championship events.
A challenging course had been prepared for the Championships and this will lead to thrilling races.
Following the Championships, the provisional squads for the 2007 Southern Region Cross Country Championships and the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, Kenya will be selected.
These squads will be for senior men 12km, senior women 8 km, junior men 8km and junior women 6km.
In the senior women’s race over 8km Central Gauteng’s Poppy Mlambo will start as favourite.
Her main opposition will come from her team mates in the very strong CGA team namely Tebogo Masehla, the Phalula twins, Irvette van Blerk and Violet Raseboya, while Ronel Thomas, Louisa Leballo, Marelise Retief (all AGN), Ntombesintu Mfunzi (EPA) and Simangele Mabuza (AVT) could all spring a surprise.
In the junior women’s race, Praxedis Dim, Pulane Mosome and Liezl Uys will try to upset the hot favourite, Lena Lotter (Western Province).
Lotter has been in a class of her own and a defeat for her will be the major upset of the meeting.
The programme of the day starts at 09:00 and the Championships events will take place between 09:00 and 12:10.
This will be followed by Provincial competitions in various other age groups and the last race will start at 15:35.
