False Bay surfers used their local knowledge to good effect by capturing five of the seven 2006-10-16titles in the first event of the 2006 Kahuna Surf Series for novices, when the final day of the event was completed in testing half-metre onshore waves at Muizenberg Corner on Saturday.
Kirsten Kingma (Hout Bay), who clinched the U16 Girls crown and the Best Kustomised Manoeuvre award for girls, was the only girl to break the stranglehold that the locals displayed at their home break.
Constance Haas (Plumstead) is the U12 girls champ, while Sabrina Scott (Glencairn Heights) clinched her first KSS event victory by winning the U14 girls title.
More than 80 youngsters between six and 16 years of age entered the first event, 20 more than the first event of the inaugural KSS held at Muizenberg last year.
“It was a great turnout for the first event of the series,” commented Dene Botha whose Kahuna Surfing Academy created the KSS last year to foster and encourage young surfers to enter the contest arena and experience the thrill and motivation of becoming winners.
“If the pattern is the same as last year, there’ll be at least another dozen entries for the Melbos event next month and probably over 100 in total for the final contest in Kommetjie in December,” he explained.
“A big thank you to the major surf brands for providing such great prizes for the contestants, to WP Surfing for the use of their contest equipment and to Surf Shack for their assistance at the venue,” added Botha.
Many of the major brands have grasped the opportunity to market their products to the largely unsponsored emerging surf stars with the finalists in each division earning valuable prizes from Reef Wetsuits, Kustom footwear, Puma sports, Island Style accessories, Cobian sandals, Zigzag surfing magazine and Lifestyle Surf shop.
The series champions after three events also receive commemorative medals, custom Reef Wetsuits, Freestyle watches and a three-day intensive surf camp under the supervision of Dene Botha, the country’s highest qualified surf coach, along with specialty awards of Von Zipper eyewear.
Every contestant in the KSS events gets a goodies bag containing Palmers wax, an SSA tips booklet, stickers and other surf products.
The Kahuna Surf Series also features other beach activities for the competitors and spectators to participate in, such as sandcastle building, impromptu dance displays, give-aways of sponsors’ products and the like.
The second event in the Kahuna Surf Series is scheduled for Melkbosstrand on the weekend November 4 & 5 and the final even is in Kommetjie on December 9 & 10 where the series champions are crowned.
Further details on the Kahuna Surf Series are available at the Kahuna Surf website where the Entry Form can be downloaded.
