A bunch of beautiful South African women fighters are preparing to battle it out in Cape Town’s first ever all-womens Thaiboxing tournament, happening at @mospheer (Cnr Pollux and Castor Roads, Lansdowne) on Saturday 4 August.

Fight Girls SA promoter Rayana Ameeroedien (SA’s first ever female Thaiboxing promoter, and SA Bantamweight champion) is filled with excitement when she speaks of the upcoming event.

“I’ve worked long and hard to see this happen, and finally we are able to host an all-women Thaiboxing event so, yes, I am very happy,” beams Ameeroedien.

For a cost of R50, spectators to Fight Girls South Africa will witness talented women fighters showing off their fighting prowess in the ring, while providing exposure for what is arguably the most exciting ring sport in the world.

“I want to thank our sponsors for their brilliant support as this would not have been possible without them, continues Ameeroedien. “The women are ready and they are already getting a lot of media attention, mostly because they are pretty… but tough!”

Women fighters will be converging on fight night from all over the country, to participate in this event being held in celebration of National Womens’ Day.

Also featured on the Fight Girls SA programme is an exciting men’s Muay Thai fight, backed by world hip hop champions, the Fusion group in performance.

But of the main attraction, Ameeroedien only has good words: “They are serious athletes, who deserve the platform to show what they can do.

“These women will make a strong statement on the Fight Girls stage, showing that hard work, mental and physical preparation goes hand in hand when striving to be the best in the ring.

“Participating in a full contact sport for a woman is tough – I’ve been there, so I know what they are going through and I wish them all the best for their fights.

“They know the significance of participating in this tournament, and naturally want to win. But win or lose, it will be a great feeling to say that you’ve made history in that ring.”

With the platform created by this event, Ameeroedien has made it her goal to give women fighters and her sport exposure, and to show South Africa that the country’s women can stand their ground.

“I also want to create an awareness of violence against women and children. I would like to encourage the Cape Town public to support the event, to support women in sport and to support women in general,” she concludes.
