The South African Olympic canoeing crew found the going tough at the opening World Cup sprint regatta of the year, with the women’s K2 combination of Tiffany Koch and Esti Olivier not able to reach the final at Szeged in Hungary over the weekend.
In the women’s 500m K2 race, Tiffany Koch and Esti Olivier cruised into the semi-finals with a solid third place in their heat, but then a slow first half of their the semi-final left them with too much to do, and meant they ended seventh and just missed a B-Final by one tenth of a second.
In addition to racing their K2 event, Koch and Olivier both also competed in the 500m and 5 000m K1 events, ending seventh and ninth respectively in the longer event, and both reached the E-Final for the 500m race where they crossed the line eighth and third respectively.
But the news was good on Wednesday, when both Koch and Olivier were confirmed by SASCOC in the initial Team South Africa selection for Paris 2024, where they will compete in the K2 500m at the Summer Olympic Games.
