Fritz to Captain SA vs Pakistan

Twenty-one-year-old Shandre Fritz from Western Province was today named as captain of the South African women’s cricket team to play Pakistan in five One-Day International matches in South Africa in January next year.

Johmari Logtenberg, the 17-year-old all-rounder from Kwa-Zulu Natal, was named vice-captain of the 13-strong squad.

The squad was announced in Johannesburg today by national convenor of selectors, Geraldine Smith.

In announcing the squad, Smith said: “We are currently trying to build a solid, sustainable and competitive team that will make South Africa proud and hence we have chosen the best players available.

“We are also confident that Shandre will adjust well into her new role as captain and that her leadership qualities will take the team to greater heights.”

Commenting on her appointment as captain, Fritz said: “Women’s cricket in the South Africa is going places fast and I am humbled and honoured to have been given a leadership role in this vision.

“I look forward to the challenges ahead with the full support from all stakeholders.”

Before facing Pakistan, the team will attend a three-day training camp from 25-28 November 2006 at Cricket South Africa’s High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria.

Pakistan arrive in South Africa on Monday, 15 January 2007 and are scheduled to play their first ODI match on Saturday, 20 January at Laudium.
