It was a tight battle between the defending champions and Northern Blues in the women’s final, but it turned into a golden day for for SA Hockey IPT 2024 A Section champions, Northern Blues, at St Stithians College in Johannesburg on Saturday, 14 September, 2024.
In a typical final both teams played somewhat within themselves and the chance creation stats were limited to very few, and even less of quality.
Maikemisetso Marokoane scored an early goal for the Northern Blues. After an early goal a game can often explode or unfortunately recede within itself. The latter was the case as the two teams were cagey and at times guilty of picking the wrong pass on too many occasions.
No further goals were added, and it was a victory for the Northern Blues. Tegan Fourie, the team’s co-captain shared her delight after the game:
“We feel incredible, we put in a massive shift not just today and throughout the week. Credit to Western Province who kept us on our toes throughout that game. I am so proud of the team and I’m looking forward to the celebration.”
Northern Blues Co-Captain, Tegan Fourie
The bronze medal game saw Southern Gauteng seal the final medal with the final strike of the game. Shanna Mendonca got her second and the hooter went after the second struck the backboard to make it 2-1 over the SA Under 21.
WP Peninsula Crowned B Section Champions
After six thrilling days of action at the South African Hockey IPT, Western Province Peninsula were crowned B Section champions.
WP Pens had been flawless in the tournament so far, and knew that anything other than a defeat would secure a place in the A Section in 2025. Their final fixture was against the bottom team in the tournament, Eastern Gauteng, and looked to guard against complacency.
Instead, they rose to the occasion to produce a perfect performance. Isabella Booyens netted twice along with Tanya Pieterse. Emily Bezuidenhout, LIze Steyn and Jesse Gradwell added to the scoring to seal a 7-0 win, and with it, the title as B Section champions for 2024.
The Silver medal went to Northern Daisies won the silver before they played their last game of the tournament, while it was Eastern Province who secured the bronze medal pipping KZN Mynahs on goal difference.
