As South Africa celebrates Freedom Day, gsport takes a moment to reflect on its journey of empowering women in sport. Since its inception in 2006, gsport has been committed to providing a platform for women in sport to be recognized, elevated, and empowered.

Over the years, gsport has provided a voice for many women in the industry who have been overlooked and undervalued. It has given them the opportunity to showcase their talent, hone their skills, and pursue their dreams.

5 Ways gsport Opened the Industry in 2022

As gsport marks this occasion, we proudly announce 27 young women who have been empowered by the initiative since 2006. These women have gone on to achieve great things in their respective fields, paving the way for a new generation of women to follow in their footsteps.

Ananya Upendran, Babsie Kutwana, Celine Abrahams, Hloni Mtimkulu, Itumeleng Banda, Jo Prins, Julia Stuart, Kea Motlokwa, Lerato Malekutu, Lesego Pooe, Lonwabo Nkohla, Marisa Calvert, Motshidisi Mohono, Nonto Nothana, Oarabile Diphoko, Pearl Shongwe, Rachel Makhura, Rudene Hare, Simphiwe Dludlu, Sinethemba Mbatha, Tlamelo Kganakga, Tumi Ngkepele, Usher Komugisha, Vusiwe Ngcobo, Xoli Zondo, Zanele Mdodana, and Zintle Tunce are the 27 stars that gsport celebrates today.

But we must also acknowledge that these 27 women are just a small fraction of the many women who have been empowered by gsport. It was a difficult task to narrow it down to just 27 names, as there are so many more who have been positively impacted by the initiative.

On Wednesday, 26 April 2023, to mark Freedom Day and celebrate how far we have come, we gathered at Big Mouth on Nelson Mandela Square, and committed to unity in women’s sport.

Women in Sport Celebrate Freedom and Opportunities at gsport Networking Lunch

The strength of gsport lies in its ability to unite women from all walks of life in their passion for sport. The initiative has created a sense of unity and pride among women in sport, inspiring them to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and make a difference.

As we celebrate this Freedom Day, let us continue to support and empower women in sport. Let us create a world where women are recognized, valued, and respected for their contributions to sport. Let us continue to elevate new stars and open up the industry for generations to come.
