gsport Woman in PR and Sponsorship Winner Marisa Calvert Continues to Break Barriers

by | Dec 23, 2019

gsport Editor, Kass Naidoo, had the honour of interviewing 2019 Momentum gsport award winner, Marisa Calvert, who had won the Woman in PR and Sponsorship gong at the prestigious event. Calvert spoke about her victory and how she manages to juggle her career and personal life.

Back in August 2019, Calvert fought off tough competition going up against Lali Stander and Keabetswe Taele to win the Woman in PR and Sponsorship award for the very first time.

“It felt really good to finally get recognised. I know that the sports PR world itself for women of colour, especially, is so niche,” Calvert told gsport at the SunSquare City Bowl Hotel.

Playing a huge role in university sport, Calvert has been dedicated to ensuring that sport develops from grassroots level.

“It’s hard work. It’s easy to get an elite athlete on a radio station or on a spread in a magazine, but it’s the university sports athletes that you have to PR the most because we know where they come from, what they do, it’s easier access for anybody in the media.”

With the challenges that come as a woman in PR, Calvert shared advice that other young ladies should take note of.

“I always say believe in yourself, trust in your gut and work hard. Never give up. I mean I’ve got a three-year-old and I got a 38-year-old (laughs), so I’ve got two boys that I need to look after but they know that when I get home it’s phone calls, it’s emails, it is making sure that when I close my eyes my to-do list is empty.”

Calvert continued to talk about her issues suffering with anxiety from a young age and how she finds marathon running as her coping mechanism. Check out the rest of her interview below!
