individual medalists Alejandra Morales Martinez (gold) and Nikita Chambers (silver) for their incredible performances at the Region 5 Youth Games in Lesotho! https://t.co/SPtnm6ZegK— Gymnastics South Africa (@SAGymnastics) December 4, 2021
Martinez also starred in the team tumbling competition alongside her South African team mates, including Chambers, Juliana van Wyk and Mischka van Deventer, as they secured the gold medal.
Tumbling, also referred to as power tumbling, requires a gymnast to perform a series of acrobatic skills down a 25-metres long spring track.
Martinez has a passionate fan base back in Boksburg and she received a star send off when she left with Team South Africa for the Games.
Her coach, Eugene Kleynhand, told gsport that it was her first competition outside of South Africa, and he is really proud.
“She is an exceptional young lady, and a phenomenal athlete with an amazing supportive family…that’s already a recipe for success. This is only the beginning of the road for Ali,” he said.
All in all, the women gymnasts accounted for two of the four gold medals won by Team SA gymnasts at the 2021 Region V Youth Games.
