South Africa’s U-17 team have been impressive so far in the inaugural COSAFA Women’s U-17 Championships in Mauritius as they all but confirmed their semi-final spot after beating Botswana 5-1 on Monday, 23 September.
Head coach Simphiwe Dludlu has pointed out that her side faced a tougher opponent in Botswana and expected the game to be a tight affair.
“I think this game went the way that we expected it. It was never going to be an avalanche of goals like our first game because we played a more structured and organised opponent that is Botswana,” Dludlu told SAFA Media after the match.
“But I like how our girls applied themselves in the game. We tried different formations which worked for us because tactically you have to look at where are the holes and where we can exploit the spaces.
“We knew that they were going to want to play on the long ball every time and we found ways to minimise those from happening to us and I think we won the ball in right areas, still mistakes there and there because they are still young and with pressure now in this game they were making mistakes but they were recovering and rebuilding and restructuring,” she ended.
