At gsport, our commitment has always been to showcase the incredible talent of women in sport across the nation. While we have predominantly held our events in Gauteng, we are now spreading our wings and venturing beyond Johannesburg to bring our gatherings to different regions.
One significant milestone was our first-ever #gsportGlobal gathering in Gqeberha during the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. This experience opened our eyes to the importance of bridging the gap between Africa and the rest of the world, igniting a desire for further expansion.
Recently, we organized a memorable Freedom Day lunch at Mandela Square in Johannesburg, where emerging women in sport had the opportunity to mingle with industry stars. The event was a resounding success, prompting #gsport17 Woman in Radio winner, Cato Louw, to comment on social media, “Cape Town, next?”
In The Year of Women’s Sport, it became clear that we needed to take our initiative to Cape Town and host a ground-breaking #gsportNetworking session in the Mother City. Coinciding with the opening of nominations for the 2023 Momentum gsport Awards, the excitement among the nearly 40 guests who attended our event at La Parada restaurant in the V&A Waterfront was palpable, especially on a rare sunny day amidst a week of rain.
The gathering brought together athletes, women in media, sports therapists, administrators, and longstanding male advocates of women’s sport. Over a shared meal, we exchanged stories of success and forged new connections, creating a truly memorable afternoon against the backdrop of Cape Town’s beauty.
Some of the big names that came through to La Parada at the V&A Waterfront were Olympic icon and gsport Hall of Famer, Elana Meyer, former Momentum gsport Award winners, Cato Louw, Rene Naylor, Zanele Mdodana, Jo Prins, Lee Steyn, Noluthando Makalima, Ilhaam Groenewald and Dr Sherylle Calder. The gathering also hosted new and emerging faces in the media to give them the opportunity to rub shoulders with industry leaders.
As the sun set behind Table Mountain and selfies captured the moments, our team felt an overwhelming sense of support for gsport and for women’s sport as a whole. This historic #gsportNetworking event has invigorated us, reaffirming our mission to close the visibility gap in women’s sport.
Now, as the #PowerOfRecognition takes center stage with the opening of #gsport18 nominations, we invite you to join us in making the circle bigger. Nominate deserving candidates for recognition on the prestigious Momentum gsport Awards stage by visiting gsport.co.za/awards and making your mark.
Together, let’s amplify the voices of our sportswomen and celebrate their remarkable achievements. Help us make a difference in the lives of women in sport who are changing the game.
