Jessica Greeff has continued on her winning run, crowned the Mind Sports South Africa’s Person of the Year as well as the Gamer of the Year.
This comes a week after she made the Annual List of Newsmakers for the gsport’s #GAL2024 event on Monday, 2 December 2024.
Greeff has been in outstanding form this year as she helped her team win the Protea Counter Strike 2 Esports Team won IESF’s African Esports Championships (AEC24) in Casablanca and then led her team to IESF’s World Esports Championships (WEC24) in Riyadh in November of this year where the team had a resounding victory over Norway.
She was also named in the Team of Year along with talented newcomer Avonique van Rooyen, Megan van der Westhuizen, Kayhla Rose Calder, Christin Brazier, and Chrissie Webster.
Avonique van Rooyen has been making waves in esports in recent months. The 16-year-old was part of the team that won the African Champions, and she also competed in the World Championships. For these sensational performances, Van Rooyen was awarded the Best Newcomer of the Year gong.
To add to the end-of-year excitement, MSSA also held their 2024 Online SA National Championships and it will come as no surprise that CounterStrike GO trio Greeff, Van Rooyen, and Van Der Westhuizen were among the top performers.
All these women received their senior National Colours, capping off what has been a memorable year – not just for the top female players – but for women in esports.
Female Mobile Legends Bang Bang Team, BellaTrixes of Maverick Esports dominated their division at the championships. Under the leadership of Neisha Khan the team earned their National Colours as well as a berth in the 2025 National Team Trials (NTT).
There was a lot to play for in this competition as the top players were able to reach the National Team Trials which will take place in March 2025. However, there will be three other champions that teams can still use as qualification for NTT.
Finally, MSSA continues to play its part in the development of esports as 20 girls were awarded Provincial High School Colours.
