South African Esports history was made this week when no less than 26 women and girls were awarded their Senior Provincial Colours, the largest number to receive the honour in Mind Sports South Africa’s history.
It has been a groundbreaking year for women in esports as they put themselves on the map locally and internationally. An all-women Protea Counter-Strike 2 Esports team won the African Esports Championships in Casablanca, Morocco, in August 2024.
Led by recent #GAL2024 recipient, Jess Greeff, the team put together dominating performances to secure the title.
It was a remarkable feat, as Greeff was the only player with international experience. That team consisted of Avonique van Rooyen, Megan van der Westhuizen, Kayhla Calder, and Christin Brazier.
That win saw Greeff and her team qualify to participate in the International Esports Federation’s (IESF) 16th World Esports Championships in Riyadh, where they showed their mettle under trying circumstances.

One player who shone in that competition was Van Rooyen, the school girl who was also instrumental in their African Championship victory, and is certainly a player to keep an eye on for the future.
Another player who received their colours, that has been profiled by gsport is Je’Nielle Cavanagh. She shot to fame after only being in esports for a year and a half. She has since become a household name as we come to the end of 2024.
In a previous interview with gsport, Cavanagh had this advice for those who are thinking of joining the world of esports: “Don’t listen to the madness and block out the noise. Don’t fit in, just be authentically you, do what you like, and do what you enjoy!”
