Mind Sports South Africa’s all women’s Protea Counter Strike Esports Team displayed sporting excellence to be crowned the African Esports champions in Casablanca on Tuesday, 20 August 2024.
The MSSA team was phenomenal in the final, dominating the contest for a win 2-0 over Tunisia to seal the confidence-boosting title for the South African team made up of Jess Greeff, Avonique van Rooyen, Megan van der Westhuizen, Kayhla Calder and Christin Brazier, who laid down an unbeaten track to the final.
Their campaign began when they prevailed over hosts Morocco, and that 2-nil victory set the tone for the team who continued to dominate their opponents. Next up was Egypt who were enjoying some good form, after beating Tunisia. South Africa was a cut above the rest and made easy work of that meeting, where they were again 2-0 winners.
Greeff was the only player on the team who has represented South Africa on the international stage twice, and captain’s experience showed as she was instrumental in leading her team to the title.
Greeff also picked up Most Valued Player in the final as her Average Damage per Round (ADR) peaked at a whopping 117.
Their championship win places their performance as the best-ever by an SA female Counter-Strike team, the previous record held by Gabriella Isaacs in 2012, who was second in StarCraft II at the International Esports Federation World Championships in South Korea.
The team has now qualified for the IESF World Champs in Riyadh from 11-19 November 2024, and the pressure will be on to pursue the top prize now that they have managed to capture the African title.
