The World Aquatics Championships is well underway in Doha, Qatar. The event has already seen several South African open water swimmers, divers, and the water polo team in action as the competition runs from 2-18 February 2024.
Julia Vincent is flying the South African flag high, the veteran diver sealed a place in the 3m Springboard final after she managed a 10th place finishing in Friday morning semi-finals. Vincent will be keen to better her finish at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Japan where she ended in 10th place overall. The final takes place at 5:32 pm on Friday.
On Thursday Vincent put in a strong performance which saw her just manage to make it to the semis, when she ended 16th in the Preliminaries. Meanwhile, Bailey Heydra wasn’t able to join her South African compatriot, finishing in the 42nd spot.
Thursday also saw the South African women’s water polo team play their final group D match of the competition, as they took on Great Britain. It was another match where the South Africans were beaten by a superior opponents. The 14-5 loss means that they ended the group stages without a win, having lost to Italy and Canada earlier in the week.
On Wednesday, Amiga de Jäger and Tory Earle participated in the 5km open swim. De Jäger and Earle finished the race a few places between each other, ending 22nd and 25th respectively. Dutch swimmer Sharon van Rouwendaal won the gold medal as Chelsea Gubecka from Australia took silver and Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha bagged bronze.
