South African off-road racer Kirsten Landman reveals the challenges she overcame as she completed Stage 1 at the 2023 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, 1 January.

Sharing on her Facebook page, Landman said: “What a day! That was a tough stage but I loved every second of it.

“I feel I’m still getting to grips with the rally bike and navigation but I’m very happy with my day and progress.

“They really threw everything at us on stage one with relentless rocks and some big dunes, fast straights with lots of lurkers and the cars caught me at KM 150 which meant the track changed completely and became like a scalectrix track which massive deeps ruts in the sand.

“If this is only stage 1, sho wee we’re in for a tough Dakar

“Onto stage 2:

Total distance – 590kms

Special stage – 430kms.”

In 2020, Landman became the first African woman to finish the world’s toughest off-road race on a bike.
