Nahoon Reef delivered epic 4-6 foot offshore surf for the first day of the 41st edition of the 2007 South African Surfing Championships on Thursday, as warm weather and clear skies surf greeted competitors in East London.
Penny Robarts of Boland is the defending Women’s champion, while Tammy Lee Smith of Zululand is defending her Under 20 Girls Title.
Once the Men’s Division had sampled what the Reef had to offer earlier in the day, the Women’s first round got under way, and Kirsty Delport (KZN) and Heather Clark (SKZN) immediately raised the stakes by recording first round wins, to advance directly to Round Three.
The SA Championships is the longest running surfing event in Africa and one of the longest running contests in the World.
Steeped in tradition, it features over 150 surfers competing for their provincial teams as well as for individual honours in the Men’s, Women’s, Under 20 Boys and Under 20 Girls Divisions.
Winners of the provincial team event will take home the 35 year old President’s Cup, while individuals winners will be crowned as the SA Champions in their respective divisions.
Held in a different province each year, the championships takes four days to complete and, while there is no prize-money on offer, the chance to become one of the four National champions is priceless.
Surfers competing this year are representing defending champions Western Province, hosts and 2006 runners up Border, Southern KZN, multiple champions KZN, Zululand, Boland, Southern Cape and Eastern Province.
The South African Surfing Championships continues until Sunday when the quarter-finals, semi-finals and Finals of all four divisions will take place.
