Stellenbosch Hosts Netball Finals

 

 

This weekend the biggest thing in national netball comes to Stellenbosch, as the National Netball League comes the business end of the season.

 

Making it to the semi-finals at the DF Malan Centre in Stellenbosch this Friday are the Cheetas from Free State, the Thunderbirds from Gauteng, the Western Cape’s Tornados, and the Comets from Eastern Cape.

 

Defending Champions Tornados will be without key defender Julene Meyer who was injured in a car accident earlier this year, but will field key players in Dione Avenant, Bronwyn Bock-Jonathan, Christine Markgraaff, Claudia Basson, Rose Wolmarans, and Zsa-Zsa Temmers.

 

Known as The Lynx when they won the title in 2005, the Free State’s Cheetas will be without national team member Adele Niemand, who was unfortunately enough to suffer injury in the same car accident as that which robbed the Tornados of Meyer.

 

Other Proteas players in the team include Charlene Hertzog and Anchen du Plessis, and the very capable Karin Venter.

 

The Comets will fancy their wild card chances with the rich sporting talent provided by the Eastern Cape, and will not consider a lack of a championship title as counting against them.

 

Thunderbirds will be counting on Leigh-Ann Zacky among the rest of their team to regain the championship, their last win on the back of a four-match winning streak starting with the tournament’s inaugural 2001 event.

 

The last three matches in the tournament’s top League will be joined by Pool  B finalists the Mermaids and the Losers, with all matches hosted at the newly revamped DF Malan Center, boasting its two indoor courts with seating for 2000 spectators, and a new playing surface.

 

Fans will be able to enjoy the best talent in the country at a price of R10.00 per person, and the venue will provide sweets, snacks, cooldrinks and light meals for sale.
