South Africa’s junior 100m hurdles champion, Erika Kleynhans, is the country’s sole survivor in search of honours at the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships, in Beijing, China.
Kleynhans turned 18 on Wednesday, and celebrated by recording a personal best time of 14.07s to survive the heats on day 3 of the championships, and to progress to the semi-finals today.
Scheduled to race on the inside track at 12:25 today, with stern competition running in the middle lanes, Kleynhans will have to improve her best time once again, to contest the final event later this afternoon.
Kleynhans will be racing against competitors including Germany’s Elbe Anne-Kathrin and Russia’s Fedoriva Aleksandra, both of whom have also posted personal best times this year, more than half-a-second faster than Kleynhans.
