London 2012 Olympic sprinter Tiffany Kruger claimed what could well become a vital victory towards the end of the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series, when she edged Jenna Venter to win the Billy the Bums Surfski Challenge, at Addington Beach in Durban on Friday evening.
From an elite field divided between the Surfski Challenge and preparing for Saturday and Sunday’s N3TC Drak Challenge in Underberg, Kruger’s sprint background paid handsome dividends as she narrowly edged Venter to claim the honours to claim crucial early series points, after her third-place finish in race one.
Savannah van Rooyen raced her way to victory in the junior girls category of the 8km long course format.
Despite many of KZN’s paddlers heading for Underberg the Billy the Bums Surfski Challenge, enjoyed a massive field of nearly double the number paddlers that took part in the same event of the 2012 calendar with numerous new faces tackling the hugely popular short course, showing just how much the sport has grown in the region in recent months.
The Buddys Surfski Challenge, the third leg of the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series, takes place on Friday 25 January. Click here for more info.
