South Africa’s impact on the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup has been recognised on the global stage, with Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp and Nadine de Klerk all named in the official Team of the Tournament.
The national captain Wolvaardt has also been selected to lead the World XI, after a tournament campaign that has now elevated her to No.1 on the ICC Women’s ODI Batting Rankings for the first time in her career.
Wolvaardt scored a record 571 runs throughout the tournament, the most ever at a single Women’s World Cup, including back-to-back centuries in the semi-final and final. Her rise to the top of the ODI batting rankings reflects not only the volume of runs, but also the authority and composure she brought to South Africa’s journey to the final.
Joining her in the Team of the Tournament is all-time leading Women’s ODI World Cup wicket taker, Marizanne Kapp, whose all-round excellence once again proved central to South Africa’s ability to compete with and overcome the world’s best.
Kapp’s 5/20 against England in the semi-final was a defining performance, helping lift her to No.2 in the ICC ODI Bowling Rankings, now close behind England’s Sophie Ecclestone.
The third South African named is Nadine de Klerk, whose performances were among the standout stories of the World Cup. De Klerk scored 208 runs and took nine wickets, showing both maturity and fearlessness.
Her match-winning 84 off 54 balls* against India in the league stage was one of the innings of the tournament, while her consistent breakthroughs with the ball have now seen her enter the top 10 of the ICC ODI All-Rounder Rankings.
This World Cup did more than highlight South Africa’s talent.
It showed the depth, resilience, and upward trajectory of the women’s game in the country, and the world’s No.1 batter now wears the Proteas crest.
