The Power of Recognition has been elevated to new heights as gsport uses the power of social media to connect former Momentum gsport Awards finalists and winners with the public to share what it means to win on the gsport stage.

In recent weeks, gsport’s social media pages have been bursting with inspiration as the opening of nominations put the spotlight on former winners and finalists. Through the #gsport18 ambassadors program, by former winners and finalists are taking up the opportunity to host gsport Twitter Spaces and IG Lives to share their experience of embracing the #PowerOfRecognition and using it to enhance their careers.

Recently, 2019 Woman in Social Media Award winner, Lee-Ann Steyn hosted a gsport Twitter Space speaking to 2022 Telkom Woman of the Year finalist, Andile Dlamini.

Steyn has broken barriers as a woman in sport, particularly cementing herself in a male dominated field. She has achieved significant milestones, having her own blog, LA Dosage, where she interviewed local and international football players and writing for a platform like Futaa.com’s football.

That Winning Feeling

All her hard work paid off when her name was called on the Momentum gsport Awards stage in 2019 after being a finalist in 2016 for the same category – Women in Social Media.

“That first nomination (in 2016) kickstarted my career. It motivated me even further. It showed even if you have a few hurdles in between, any challenges you have been facing, you doing good and it felt good to have that recognition,” Steyn said.

Fast forward to 2019, Steyn recalls sitting next to industry colleague Lerato Phago at the awards, “When my name was called out I think I sort of zoned out. I hit a blank and she nudged me, she was like: ‘It’s you, go!’”.

For Steyn, receiving this award came at the right time. “It felt like I was in the right place at the right time. I was motivated even more and I just wanted to keep doing this,” she added.

“It’s so easy to be comfortable and I don’t like being comfortable in that space. Just because I’ve won this award does not mean the work stops. It does not mean that I have made it. I just need to keep going.”

gsport on Everyone’s Lips

Steyn also reflected on how far gsport has come. “Take it years back, when gsport was still starting out people were wondering ‘What is this? Is it going to work out?’ Fast forward years later, gsport is on everyone’s lips, talking about how much of a great movement it is and what it has become.”

“I don’t think there are enough adjectives. What gsport has done for women in sport is beyond words. The fact that I don’t think there is anyone in this space or outside that space who does not know what gsport is. May it continue to soar beyond our wildest dreams,” she concluded.

If you are a former Momentum gsport Awards winner or finalist, who has been impacted by being recognised on the gsport stage, reach out to the gsport team and let’s find a way for you to play your part in elevating women’s sport on the #gsport18 journey.
