Maties Crowned University Water Polo National Champions

A triumphant end to what was a well-fought encounter between two powerhouses in University Water Polo saw Maties defeat Tuks to earn the 2021 USSA Women’s Water Polo crown. 

The Maroon Machine did not have any easy road going into the final, narrowly winning 10-8 over UCT and losing 9-5 to NMU.

“This was the most insane feeling, we have been grafting this whole year to get to this point, gyming at 5am, working with each other and it has finally paid off.” – Maties captain, Hannah Calvert

In the semi-final round, Maties faced NMU once again and this time around they fought to win 7-3.

Head coach Cameroon Sugden’s was full of praise for his team going into the final: “Coming off a good semi-final win which was hard fought after they got the better of us in the round robin.”

In the final against Tuks, Maties led 6-3 going into the last quarter, however the Pretoria side fought hard scoring 3 more points to end the match 7-6.

Maties captain, Hannah Calvert, shared her excitement saying: “This was my last year at Maties and we obviously aimed to make the crowd enjoy it, and it was a tight game. 

“It is nice to see such a young side come together and finish strong. It is my last year and I am done now. I have been at Maties for 4 years and it has been amazing years of my entire life and I am just happy to finish with a double for Maties. It has been really cool.”

NMU beat UCT 10-3 to claim 3rd place and the bronze medal of the tournament.
