Michaela Whitebooi’s judo journey on the mat began when she was just nine years old. What started as a young girl’s curiosity about a new sport quickly transformed into a passion that has defined Michaela’s life and career. Over the years, judo has given her the opportunity to travel the world, compete on international stages, and inspire a new generation of female athletes.
As Michaela continued to build momentum in her career, she demonstrated extraordinary focus, discipline, and an unwavering will to succeed. Her rise to compete on the world stage has been a testament to years of hard work and dedication. “It’s been about making sure I’m always ready — both mentally and physically — to take on the best,” Michaela says. “That mindset is what has allowed me to grow as an athlete and seize the opportunities I’ve been given.”
A Historic Olympic Journey
Michaela’s Olympic debut was not just a personal achievement; it was a historic moment. At the Paris Olympics, she became the first African judoka to win a match at the Games. Reflecting on that breakthrough, Michaela says, “When I completed my first fight, I knew I had reached a significant milestone in my career. It wasn’t just about the win — it was about making history, showing the world that African athletes, and especially African women, belong on the global stage in judo.”
But beyond the medals and victories, Michaela’s drive has always been rooted in something deeper — a desire to inspire others. “My motivation comes from wanting to inspire young girls, especially those from underrepresented communities, to believe that they can achieve anything. I want them to see me and think, ‘If she can do it, so can I.’ I want them to eclipse everything I’ve achieved and reach even greater heights.”
Momentum’s Impact on Michaela’s Career
Behind every elite athlete is a network of supporters and, for Michaela, Momentum has played a crucial role in her journey. Through her journey with Momentum, she has been able to focus better on her training and preparation for the Olympics.
“Momentum’s support has been life-changing for me,” she says. “It’s not just about the financial backing; it’s about the belief they’ve had in me and my potential.”
A highlight for Michaela was the deeply personal gesture from Momentum that she will cherish forever.
“Momentum made it possible for my mom to witness my Olympic moment in Paris. It was her first international trip and seeing her in the crowd during my victory was a memory I’ll carry with me forever. It wasn’t just my achievement — it was ours as a family. That support from Momentum went beyond the competition; it was about creating a shared, unforgettable experience.”

Michaela was part of a cohort of three female athletes that Momentum supported in various ways to make their journey to the Olympics – whether it was through supplements they needed or like Michaela, ensure that they have their support system with them.
A Call to Action for Women’s Sports
Michaela’s story shines a light on the importance of corporate sponsorships in uplifting female athletes, but she believes there is still a long way to go, particularly for sports like judo that often fall outside the mainstream spotlight. “While I’m so grateful for the backing I’ve received, I know there are many talented women athletes out there who don’t have the same support,” she explains.
“Women’s sports, especially in disciplines that don’t get as much attention, need more recognition and investment. There’s so much untapped talent, and with the right support, these athletes could achieve incredible things.”
Michaela calls on companies, both in South Africa and globally, to take up the mantle and actively support women in sports. “It’s not just about the financial investment,” she says, “it’s about providing platforms for women athletes to showcase their talent and make their mark on the world. We need to recognise their achievements, celebrate their victories, and give them the opportunity to shine.”
As Michaela takes a step back from the spotlight to reflect on her journey and plan her next adventure, her commitment to inspiring others remains unwavering. “My next chapter is still unfolding, but I know that wherever I go, I want to continue making an impact. I want to be part of creating a future where young girls don’t just dream of competing at the Olympics — they make it a reality.”
