South Africa’s Judoka Geronay Michaela Whitebooi claimed the silver medal in the 48kg category at the Africa Judo Open, that was held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Sunday, 2 June, 2024.
Whitebooi went up against 28-year-old Argentinean Keisy Perafan in the final of the 48kg category. Perafan did not make things easy, and scooped the gold medal on the day.
Whitebooi believes that every Judoka comes to the mat with a dream to walk away with the gold medal. On those days when it does not work out that way, it does not mean that it was a failure on the day, but rather an incentive to work harder and come back stronger at the next event.
Burundi’s Signoline Kanyamuneza claimed the bronze medal and Chakir Aziza from Morocco took the bronze shared with Ka Lee Wong, from Hong Kong.
South Africa was also represented by Skye Knoester, who finished in fifth position in the 63Kg category, sharing the placing with Moroccan Dounia Slimani, behind Poland’s Martyna Glubiak in gold, France’s Perinne Saint Ettiene in silver, and France’s Noa Paul and Morocco’s Chaimae Tiabi sharing the bronze medal.
The Marrakech Africa Judo Open was contested across the seven different weight categories, and involved 143 Judokas representing a total of 30 countries.
France won a combined seven gold medals to walk away with championship honours, and Cameroon finished in third place as the top-placed African nation. Morocco finished in 8th position, and South Africa closed off the top 10 owing to the points earned by Whitebooi and Knoester.
