In a powerful keynote address at the launch of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Domestic Women’s League, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, highlighted the significance of grassroots development in the success of women’s cricket in South Africa on Tuesday, 22 August 2023.
Kodwa emphasised the importance of nurturing and supporting cricket hubs in rural areas, stating, “The traditional cricket hubs like Middledrift, Alice, and Healdtown have been the birthplaces of cricket legends, and these hubs must continue to be nurtured and supported to unleash the potential of rural girls who will follow in the footsteps of role models like Ayabonga Khaka.”
The Minister called for a focus not only on talent development but also on talent retention, stressing the need for CSA to establish schools-focused girls cricket programs. By integrating rural, township, and former Model C schools, cricket can bridge gaps and build unity, inspiring young girls and creating a pipeline of skilled and passionate players.
Kodwa also highlighted the transformative power of grassroots development, stating, “In our pursuit of excellence, let us not forget the vital role of women in leadership positions. Cricket must be at the forefront of empowering women not only on the field but also in administration, coaching, and umpiring.”
He emphasised that empowering women in leadership positions not only enhances the game but also serves as a role model for future generations.
The Minister’s address underscored the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in developing women’s cricket. He announced the upcoming School Sport Indaba, saying, “It is my conviction that thriving school sports is the only way to transform sport in our country…I extend an invitation to all like-minded patriots, sports activists, and stakeholders to participate in this Indaba for the development of lasting solutions.”
Minister Kodwa concluded by emphasising the wider impact of the Domestic Women’s League, adding, “This league will serve as a catalyst, igniting the aspirations of young girls who dream of taking this sport seriously and making a living from playing…Cricket should become a unifying thread that binds us all, regardless of where we come from.”
The Minister’s focus on grassroots development and empowerment in women’s cricket reflects the commitment of Cricket South Africa and the government to creating opportunities for women in the sport and fostering a more inclusive and diverse cricketing ecosystem.
