Netball South Africa have launched a Trust Fund in aid of Monosi Konopi, the player who was left paralysed after a taxi accident en route to the SPAR National Netball Championships, in Cape Town in August.

Her team from Sedibeng in the Vaal Triangle was travelling between De Doorns and Worcester when the driver of their taxi lost control of the vehicle, which rolled down an embankment. Eleven other players and management staff were admitted hospital in Worcester, but all have since been discharged.
The 32-year-old Konopi has been playing netball since primary school and still played for a club in her home town. “I visited Monosi in hospital last week and she is in good spirits but there is a long, hard road ahead on the road to rehabilitation,” said Netball SA CEO Blanche de la Guerre.
“Unfortunately the prognosis is not good, and the doctors say she will be unable to walk again. We want to provide her with every support that she requires at this time, and beyond, and we’ve therefore launched a trust through which we can raise funds to assist her family to afford her the best care possible.”
Konopi was initially transferred to Tygerberg Hospital but because of the severity of her injuries she has been moved to the spinal ICU at Groote Schuur Hospital, where her rehabilitation will take place. It is not known when she will be stable enough to be moved back home.
Konopi’s boyfriend Bongani Maqekeza said the family appreciated all the support received from Netball SA and the wider netball community. “It has been an exceptionally difficult time for our family and most especially for Monosi.
“The doctors have been very supportive and we have made it clear that she will need extensive care going forward. The family will appreciate any assistance.”
De la Guerre encouraged members of the public as well as corporates to donate to Konopi’s cause adding that any amount would be welcome.
