Olivia Nel had a birthday to remember as the swimmer won bronze in the 50m freestyle on Wednesday night. She secured the final podium spot when she hit the board with a time of 24.82 at the World University Games in Germany.
SA’s golden girl Lara van Niekerk was not able to add another medal to her trophy cabinet as she finished in sixth place in the 100m breaststroke final, as her compatriot Simone’ Moll was seventh in that race.
Colette Uys also added to South Africa’s medal tally, winning bronze in the women’s shot put, which now takes Team SA to 12 medals.

Hannah van Niekerk recorded a personal best in the women’s 400m hurdles semi-finals. She raced to a time of 56.16 to book her place in Thursday’s final. Charné Swart secured her spot in the women’s 800m final as she finished second, crossing the finish line in 2:01.68 in Thursday’s semi-final.
Karmen Fouché narrowly missed out on a podium place in the women’s high jump final. She finished fourth with a solid effort as she recorded a 1.74m clearance.
In diving, Bailey Heydra finished in 12th in the 1m Springboard final with a score of 195.10.
