Oranje Meisies and Adelaide School emerged proud winners at the national finals of the RCS Rising Stars Tennis Series, on Sunday 29 October at the Polokwane Tennis Club in Limpopo.

Defending champions Oranje Meisies where not to be ousted from their throne as they put on a spectacular display of grit and determination to beat Laerskool Monumentpark and retain their title, in the fourth edition of Tennis South Africa’s premier development programme.

Monumentpark took second place on the podium, with Laerskool Mooirivier in third on the podium for the able-bodied girls primary school category.

It was a fiercely contested battle in the wheelchair tennis girl’s category, as Adelaide School emerged triumphant, with Meerhof School in second and Helen Frans School finishing in third.

Speaking to the media, TSA President Gavin Crookes extended his congratulations to all the winners and the schools that qualified for the RCS Rising Star Tennis National Final. “As a nationwide series, the level of competition is very high and progressing this far is a remarkable achievement.”

The RCS Rising Star Tennis series aims to make tennis a more inclusive sport in South Africa by providing equal opportunities to school players and empowering the youth from disadvantaged communities. Nine provinces were represented in the able-bodied category with six provinces being represented in the wheelchair tennis category.

“We are proud to have ensured that this series reaches young players in the underprivileged areas of South Africa,” said Crookes. “Development is the key aspect of this annual campaign in ensuring the sport continues to grow at grassroots level.”

The 2023 series had a total of 730 schools with 79 new schools joining the programme. It also featured 675 primary school squads and 55 wheelchair tennis teams (all representing underprivileged schools) from around the country.
