Outstanding Team SA Performance at Special Olympics World Summer Games

Team South Africa delivered an outstanding performance at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin, Germany, which concluded on Saturday, 24 June 2023.

Table tennis players Innocentia Msikinya and Puleng Gabamoele secured podium positions, with Msikinya winning gold in women’s doubles and silver in singles, and Gabamoele taking silver in doubles and silver in singles. Thato Mohlala finished third in both singles and doubles competitions.

Bronwyn Ramathula etched her name in the 100m backstroke by claiming first place, as well as bronze in the 100m breaststroke, and Jennifer Higgings did not fall behind with back-to-back medals in the 100m freestyle to take gold and bronze in the 100m butterfly. Cornelia Fowler was the standout in open water, capturing first place and a silver medal in the 800m freestyle.

In athletics, Kamogelo Moncho dominated the 5000m race to win gold and bronze in the 1500m.

Team South Africa competed against 7000 athletes from 180 countries.
