Top South African bodyboarding athlete Lyndall Pells has placed third in her first heat at the 2006 International Surfing Association’s 21st World Surfing Games, her two scoring waves counting to a total of 5.93, just behind second-placed Gemma Harris (UK) on a perfect 6.0.
In the first results available for South African women at the ‘Olympics of Surfing’, Portugal’s Rita Pires scorched ahead in her heat, taking in an aggregate 12.33 in her best two waves, while Switzerland’s Anja Hurlimann came last with a disappointing 3.17 aggregate.
With the difference between advancing and repercharge relegation so narrow, Pells will be wondering what else she could have done to show her form.
Pells caught a total of eight rides in the allotted time, three more Pires and twice as many as Harris, but supporters may wonder whether greater focus on fewer rides will serve her cause better in the Repercharge rounds to come.
Having placed third in the first Round, Pells now contests the Repercharge rounds, where she encounters Spain’s Marina Taylor (who scored at 6.96 in Round 1), and Ireland’s Ashley Smith (5.20).
