The #PowerOfRecognition series is in full swing as we highlight former winners and finalists who have received recognition on the Momentum gsport Awards stage.
In 2020, Lona Benya was a finalist in the Woman in PR and Sponsorship category, as she was honoured for her outstanding work to amplify women in sport in the PR and Sponsorship space through her company, maBenya Sports.
Benya’s innovative thinking, exceptional leadership, and commitment to promoting women’s sport has made her a true trailblazer in the world of sport.
Speaking with Asanda Shozi, Kenya chats about recognition and her wish for women’s sport.
Lona, thank you so much for chatting to us! In 2020 you were a finalist in the Woman in PR & Sponsorship category on the Momentum gsport Awards stage. Why do you think the Power of Recognition is important?
To me this can be 2 fold, firstly, it can infuse the amount of motivation one has to do more and more on the field of career they have chosen or it can also yield negative results when one is looking for it in the wrong way and that could be negative power of recognition.
How do you handle the spotlight?
I do not subscribe to any spotlight but if I were to handle it I think being you all the time will set you free.
What was the best part of your Momentum gsport Awards experience?
Certainly seeing my name amongst other nominees as a finalist & my mom calling me to tell me she saw my name on TV.
What is your advice to someone who is perhaps struggling to value themselves and recognize their own achievements?
Stop being selfish upon yourself, live life in your own lane.
What are your thoughts on The Year of Women’s Sport and the spotlight on women’s sport in 2023?
Has to be the best ever year for the country. Hopefully the corporate perception of women in sport will change and we get to see more corporations investing in the game.
What are your views on the impact of the work gsport does?
The content is always appealing together with visibility of the brand gsport and also always seeing new & upcoming sport enthusiasts given opportunities to rise with the home of gsport.
What can we do to close the visibility gap in women’s sport? And what part are you playing?
With no doubt I think the gap is narrowing with many sport driven companies and organisations taking a stand. We can only improve on what is there but the gap is certainly narrowing. I am a sport consultant focused on marketing, events and talent management under MaBenya Sports Consultants.
What is your message to South African women’s teams due to play in World Cups this year?
There can never be any other time but now, write your names in history books.
What are your immediate goals?
Finishing my Masters Degree within set time by institution.
What is your wish for women’s sport?
Recognition of the impact women’s sport has as a business but mostly as an economic indicator.
