England are looking forward to playing in front of what promises to be an 80 000 home crowd in their FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final encounter against co-hosts Australia on Wednesday, 16 August 2023.
The Lionesses will be back at Stadium Australia in Sydney, after they fought back from a goal down to beat Colombia in the quarterfinal on Saturday.
Speaking to the media after their quarterfinal final match, England’s Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman praised her side’s resilience, after falling behind in the 44th minute, before Lauren Hemp’s equaliser in first-half injury time and Alessia Russo’s winner.
They, too, will have to show plenty of character to overcome Australia, who prevailed 7-6 on penalties over France.
“That’s huge, but this was big too. It felt like an away game, but we just concentrated,” Wiegman said.
“It’s just really fantastic that we can be here and be part of it.
“We’re through to the semifinals and we are going to stay till the end of the tournament,” she concluded.
In the other semi-final match-up, Sweden will take on Spain at Eden Park in Auckland on Tuesday, 15 August.
