Proteas Women Shift Focus to Second T20I

South Africa’s Proteas Women will be looking to bounce back in their T20I Series, after a 5-wicket loss to Pakistan in the opening match in Karachi on Friday, 1 September 2023.

In a thrilling encounter, the Proteas set Pakistan a solid 151-run target after interim captain Laura Wolvaardt and opening partner Tazmin Brits (78 off 64) shared an 85-run stand until the first wicket in 12.4 overs.

In the run-chase, Pakistan’s Sidra Ameen (33) and Bismah Maroof (37) set up the hosts’ innings with top-order contributions.

It looked even more so after Pakistan had four run outs during their innings.

However, in the 16th over, Nadine de Klerk conceded 17 runs to bring Pakistan back into the game, with three wides.

The drama continued as both nations kept spectators on the edge of their seats with Suné Luus and Marizanne Kapp running out Muneeba Ali (19) off the last ball of the penultimate over to leave Pakistan requiring eight runs with six balls remaining.

Masabata Klaas, who bowled the final over exceptionally, could not not prevent Aliya Riaz and Fatima Sana scampering through for the winning single.

The Proteas will head back to the drawing board as they prepare for their second T20I against Pakistan on Sunday, 3 September 2023 at 16h30 SA time.
