Western Province will field a strong team at the upcoming Inter-Provincial Golf Tournament happening in Germiston from September 17-22.

The team includes 19-year-old sensation Kelli Shean, who was recently selected for the three women team to represent South Africa in next month’s World Amateur Team Championships  at the de Zalze and Stellenbosch Golf Courses.

For this year’s IPT, Shean teams up with veteran Gilly Tebbutt (Tebbutt represents WP for the 34th consecutive year at the Inter-Provincial), Wendy Warrington (who represented South Africa from 1988 to 2002), Joanne Lefson (who first appeared for WP in 1988), Carol Charnock (twice winner of the Southern Cape Golf Champs), and Jacqui Rathfelder (who has represented WP for the past seven years).

Vice-President of Women’s Golf WP, Ros de Klerk, is hoping Western Province’s experience will hold them in good stead.

“Our team is very strong in terms of experience, and we hope this will count against the "younger guns" from the other provinces, de Klerk told gsport.

“Last year, we were disappointed not to make it into the A section, and we’ve made this a primary goal for this year’s tournament.

“We would like primarily to qualify for the A section, and once we have achieved that, try to win that section,” said de Klerk.

Western Province is expecting strong competition from the Gauteng Cats and Southern Cape.
