SAfm Afternoon Talk’s Thabiso and 5fm deejay Koula have both met the qualification requirements for this year’s Comrades Marathon, and have already submitted their applications to beat the race’s 7 May cut-off date for entries.
“I am starting to wake up feeling as if I have worms squirming around in my tummy. It’s a strange feeling because I am nervous, but am also very excited. I will be relieved on the day,” said Thabiso.
The two have also entered this weekend’s Nedbank Johannesburg City Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 6 May, and is also the final qualifier in
for the ultra-marathon.
“It’s more for training, keeping on our feet for a lot longer than our weekday running time. Its important that we get our legs used to the long distances, so we are just going to take it easy and we are not going into it for the time.”
“Its gets tough sometimes when feel lazy, but I have also learnt to listen to my body. When it feels like its going to be an ardous task to get on the road, I have opted to go on the treadmill.
“On some occasions, I don’t run at all, and walk instead. I need to do something at least six times a week at this stage, now the minimum I run is 5km.”
Runners can qualify right up to the day before entries close, and other races which offer final qualification opportunities include the Jock of the Bushveld 54km in Mpumalanga, the Bill Rowan Ultra over 60km in the North West, the Wilpro Knysna Classic Two Lagoons Ultra over 65km, the City of Rivers 60km Comrades Tester in East London, and the Mannix Monster 64km in
.
"The Comrades Marathon Association has a strict policy of not accepting entries after the closing date, and this year will be no exception," said GM Gary Boshoff.
"We need six weeks to process everyone and make final plans for details such as ordering t-shirts, the production of race numbers and the stocking of refreshment stations," said Boshoff.
